Norplant

Norplant is a form of contraception to prevent pregnancy by implanting six slow-release capsules filled with a synthetic version of the female hormone, progestin, into a woman’s body.

Drug Uses

Norplant provides protection against pregnancy for a period of five years. The soft capsules are implanted under the skin of a woman’s upper arm. Protection usually begins within 24 hours after a minor surgical procedure to implant the capsules. Norplant works by preventing ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to travel to the uterus.

Precautions/Warnings

Before using Norplant inform your doctor if you have suffered from any of the following medical conditions: hypertension, stroke, any heart disorder including angina, a bleeding disorder, hormone-related cancer, liver disease, abnormal vaginal bleeding, severe migraine headaches or diabetes. If any of these conditions apply, Norplant may not be suitable for you, or you will need regular monitoring by a doctor during treatment. Women who smoke should avoid the use of Norplant.

If you are breast-feeding you will need to discuss the risks of using Norplant with your doctor because Norplant is excreted into breast milk.

After the implant is done, it is recommended that you visit your doctor once a week for the first three weeks to ensure that you are in good health.

Norplant does not provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV AIDS.
